Recently there has been some debate of which acronym is “proper” for the LGBT+ community. With so many new or lesser-known acronyms, how is one supposed to know what they are and what they mean? Below is a list of the most popular ones I could find.
LGBT: (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender ) – This is well known, but rather exclusive, referring only to those who are lesbian, gay, bi, and/or transgender.
LGBTQ: (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) – This is also a well known acronym that tacks on “queer” at the end, but tends to be controversial due to the history of that word.
QUILTBAG: (Queer/questioning, undecided, intersex, lesbian, transgender, bisexual, asexual/ally, and gay.) – This is lesser known, and in my opinion kind of unflattering. It also still leaves some people out.
GSM: (Gender and sexual minority) / GSRM (Gender, sexual, and romantic minority) – While inclusive, this acronym not widely known.
MOGAI: (Marginalized orientations, gender alignments, and intersex) – While seemingly inclusive, there seems to be some stigma over the use of this acronym in the Ace community. It too is not a well-known acronym.
With all these all of these different acronyms, which ones should we use? From what I have seen, there is no definite answer other than to use what works best for you. Use an acronym you are comfortable with and that is inclusive of your identity, and until we come to an actual conclusion on which acronym is used universally, use your preference.
